Driving the Hybrid Dream: Best Hybrid Cars in the Philippines
Princess Anaviso
17 August, 2022
Last updated August 17,
2022
The rising inflation has left everyone scrambling to save money on gas. Some even consider selling their cars—and understandably so, because how can anyone afford to drive around with such exorbitant fuel prices?
Still, owning a car has its undeniable upsides. If you’re looking to buy a vehicle and you have the budget for it, it’s never too late to consider hybrid cars in the Philippines.
You read that right—locally purchasing a hybrid vehicle isn’t a far-fetched dream anymore. Hybrid cars entered the Philippine automotive market way back in 2009 when Toyota first introduced the iconic Toyota Prius.[1] Find out why hybrid cars are great alternatives to good old cars in this extensive beginner’s guide.
What is a Hybrid Car?
A hybrid car is a vehicle with at least one electric motor paired with a gasoline engine. Because it has two power sources, a hybrid car can choose which one is more efficient in a given driving condition. When you’re driving slow, most hybrid cars are programmed to use the electric motor to move the car. At higher speeds, the regular engine is arguably the better choice.
But how does a vehicle run using electricity? A hybrid car comes with a high-voltage battery separate from the car’s conventional battery. Power is generated by capturing energy from the deceleration usually lost to the heat generated by the brakes—a process known as regenerative braking. A hybrid car also uses its gasoline engine to charge and maintain the power of the battery.
You can choose to drive solely using the electric motor, and then just switch to the gasoline engine when the battery is low. This can go the other way around as well. Ran out of fuel? Switch to the electric motor before you reach the next gas station. From there, you can probably deduce the advantages of owning a hybrid car.
Types of Hybrid Vehicles
Hybrid cars also have subcategories that offer various advantages and disadvantages.[2] It’s best to familiarize yourself with these types, so you can better sift through the long list of hybrid cars in the Philippines.
Parallel hybrids are the most common vehicles you’ll find. In a parallel hybrid, the electric motor and the gasoline engine are connected to the transmission, effectively blending the two power sources.
Series hybrids are the opposites of parallels, as the electric motor is the one doing the legwork, and there’s no physical connection between the engine and the wheels. The gasoline engine is simply there to recharge the electric motor. A series hybrid operates like an electric vehicle, only with a gasoline engine.
Plug-in hybrids have a larger battery pack compared to other hybrids, and they must be fully recharged using an external electricity source. If you run out of battery, this vehicle will revert to a conventional parallel hybrid.
Mild hybrids can’t run on electricity alone, but their electric motor still assists the gasoline engine. This results in reduced fuel consumption, although not as efficient as their hybrid counterparts.
What is the Difference Between Hybrid Cars vs Electric Vehicles?
Before you think about plugging an extension cord that will stretch to your garage, let’s make one thing clear: a hybrid car isn’t exactly the same as an electric vehicle.
As explained above, hybrid cars for sale in the Philippines still come with a gasoline engine that helps them to accelerate. They have the option to choose whatever power source fits.
Meanwhile, electric vehicles, commonly referred to as EVs, run purely on electricity with little to no assistance from a gasoline engine. EVs are usually powered by large battery packs that allow them to run at least 400 kilometers non-stop. As convenient as they sound, they come with high price tags, and they’ll probably blow up your Meralco bill every month.
While electric vehicles have long since been available in the market, most establishments have yet to add accommodations for EV car owners. For example, you probably won’t find an EV charging station in far-flung provinces, but you’ll surely find a gas station if you drive long enough. That’s why it’s currently better to invest in hybrid cars in the Philippines.
Pros and Cons of Using a Hybrid Car
Owning a hybrid car sounds good and all, but just like with any other purchase, you should always consider the pros and cons. Here are the most common advantages and disadvantages you should review before going to the nearest car dealership.
Hybrid Car Advantages
Pro: Better Fuel Economy
Probably the biggest upside is the fuel consumption of a hybrid car. Because it comes with an electric motor that can take over or assist the gasoline engine, hybrid cars tend to rank among the top fuel-efficient cars compared to traditional vehicles. While hybrids tend to be more expensive, owning one can be more cost-effective in the long run.
Pro: Sustainable and Eco-Friendly
Because hybrid cars have electric motors, their gas engines tend to consume less fuel, leading to reduced carbon dioxide emissions. If you’re a green-conscious person looking to contribute to the numerous efforts that address the global climate crisis, you should consider owning a hybrid car.
Pro: Smoother Ride and Quieter Engine
An electric motor provides higher torque compared to a traditional gasoline engine. This allows a hybrid car to accelerate faster and with less vibrations. An electric motor also makes little to no noise, resulting in a smooth and peaceful drive. You can enjoy your travel playlists or conversations with your passengers better without being distracted by angry car noises.
Hybrid Car Disadvantages
Con: More Expensive Upfront
There’s a reason why hybrid and electric vehicles still aren’t too popular despite them being in the market for almost a decade now. It’s because they come with price tags that will make your wallet cry. Try to compare this roster of hybrids to our list of cheapest cars in the Philippines, and see if you still prefer a hybrid car over a cheaper alternative.
Con: Poorer Handling
Another con of hybrid cars is that they have poorer handling compared to traditional cars. Because hybrid cars are packed with innovative technologies, they tend to be heavier and are therefore more difficult to handle. The extra weight also reduces their fuel efficiency, so keep in mind the weight of the vehicle when choosing a brand-new or second-hand car.
High-Voltage Batteries
Because hybrid cars are powered by high-voltage battery packs, there’s a risk that you, your passengers, and potential rescuers can get electrocuted if an accident occurs. If you’re planning to drive a hybrid car, make sure to brush up on your defensive driving and focus all your attention on the road.
Best Hybrid Cars in the Philippines in 2023
Now that you’ve decided to go hybrid, here comes the fun part: exploring and comparing your options! To help you make the right choice, here’s an extensive list of hybrid cars available in the Philippines, arranged according to their fuel efficiency.
Hyundai Ioniq
Highway rating: 30.1 km/L
City rating: 16.1 km/L
Body type: Sedan
Transmission: Automatic
Performance: 139 HP @ 5,700 rpm

The Hyundai Ioniq easily tops the list of most fuel-efficient cars, making it one of the best hybrid cars in the Philippines for 2023. The combination of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, electric motor, and six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission allows this car to achieve an average fuel efficiency rating of 23.1 km/L, which means you won’t have to frequent gas stations each time you take your Hyundai Ioniq on an out-of-town road trip.
Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid
Highway rating: 29.7 km/L
City rating: 16.1 km/L
Body type: Sedan
Transmission: Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
Performance: 97 HP @ 5,200 rpm
Seating capacity: 4
Price: Starts at ₱1,610,000
The Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid V is never out of the conversation when talking about the best sedans in the Philippines. With an average fuel efficiency rating of 22.9 km/L, it’s almost as efficient as the Hyundai Ioniq.
This vehicle is powered by a VVT-I, four-cylinder in-line DOHC, 16-valve, paired with an equally capable electric motor.[3] Its CVT transmission allows for better handling and smoother acceleration, contributing further to its fuel efficiency.
Toyota Corolla Cross

Body type: SUV
Transmission: Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
Performance: 98 HP @ 5,200 rpm
Seating capacity: 5
Price: Starts at ₱1,665,000
Want an SUV version of the Toyota Corolla Altis? Then check out the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid V. With a highway fuel efficiency rating of 26.3 km/L, this vehicle proves to be a capable hybrid that can match the efficiency of its sedan counterparts.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is powered by a capable 97-horsepower, 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine and an equally efficient electric motor. If you’re looking for an affordable hybrid SUV, this one’s a good pick.
Toyota Prius
Highway rating: 26.1 km/L
Body type: Sedan
Transmission: CVT
Performance: 73 HP @ 5,200 rpm
Seating capacity: 5
Price: Starts at ₱2,436,000
Of course, the OG hybrid car should be part of this list. As the first hybrid model to be introduced in 2009, the Toyota Prius has evolved with the times and has remained popular among hybrid car enthusiasts.[4]
While it remains to be up there in terms of price, the Prius can still match other hybrid cars’ fuel consumption, with its highway fuel efficiency rating of 26.1 km/L. If you prefer a smoother, more comfortable ride, this car has still got it.
Toyota Camry Hybrid
Highway rating: 23.8 km/L
Body type: Sedan
Transmission: CVT
Performance: 178 HP @ 5,700 rpm
Seating capacity: 5
Price: Starts at ₱2,355,000
The Toyota Camry is pretty much the Corolla Altis’ big brother. It’s a bigger vehicle that can seat up to five people. It has a beefier 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder engine, and it’s almost double the price. While it’s not as fuel-efficient as the Corolla Altis, the Toyota Camry is still a good choice for a hybrid car for anyone looking for a more spacious sedan.
With its current vehicle lineup, there’s no wonder Toyota is a go-to for hybrid cars in the Philippines for 2022.
Geely Azkarra
Highway rating: 20 km/L
City Rating: 13 km/L
Body type: SUV
Transmission: Automatic
Performance: 187 HP @ 5,500 rpm
Seating capacity: 5
Price: Starts at ₱1,665,000
Looking for a hybrid all-wheel-drive SUV that’s relatively cheap? Chinese car manufacturer Geely has you covered with the Geely Azkarra.
First introduced in 2020, the Azkarra is a mild hybrid vehicle powered by a 48V Electric Motor Synergy battery and a 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine.[5] While it’s not as fuel-efficient as the other cars on the list because of its mild hybrid system, it’s still more fuel-efficient than most traditional SUVs out there.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Highway rating: 18.1 km/L
City Rating: 12.9 km/L
Body type: SUV
Transmission: Automatic
Performance: 128 HP @ 4,500 rpm
Seating capacity: 5
Price: Starts at ₱2,998,000
Mitsubishi claims that the Outlander PHEV emits up to 61% less carbon dioxide,[6] making it a great choice for eco-friendly car owners. It also has an average fuel efficiency rating of 15.5 km/L, a result of the Japanese manufacturer’s 30 years of hybrid innovation.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is also the first plug-in hybrid SUV powered by a twin electric motor system that gives this off-road car all the power. Plus, it takes only four hours to fully charge this vehicle.
Mazda 3 Hybrid
Highway Rating: 17.5 km/L
Body type: Sedan
Transmission: Automatic
Performance: 164 HP @ 6,000 rpm
Seating capacity: 5
Price: Starts at ₱1,495,000
Included in this list of top hybrid cars in the Philippines is the Mazda 3 Hybrid. This sedan is powered by Mazda’s patented M Hybrid system that pairs the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G direct-injected engine with a small belt-driven Integrated Starter Generator.[7] The Mazda 3 may be a mild hybrid, but for its price, it’s still a capable all-around vehicle from one of the most reputable car manufacturers in the world.
Volvo XC90
Highway rating: 17.2 km/L
City rating: 13.2 km/L
Body type: SUV
Transmission: Automatic
Performance: 225 HP @ 4,250 rpm
Seating capacity: 7
Price: Starts at ₱5,590,000
If you’re looking for the ultimate flex, then the Volvo XC90 mild hybrid should be your next hybrid car. While not as fuel-efficient compared to its cheaper alternatives, the Volvo XC90 is packed with power and safety features like City Safety, Run-Off Road Protection Package, and Park Assist Pilot.[8] The XC90 has a plug-in hybrid model, the Volvo XC90 T8, but it currently isn’t available in the local market.
Geely Okavango
Highway rating: 17 km/L
City rating: 12 km/L
Body type: SUV
Transmission: Automatic
Performance: 190 HP @ 5,500 rpm
Seating capacity: 7
Price: Starts at ₱1,285,000
The Geely Okavango is an even more affordable SUV that has the same power as the Azkarra in an even more spacious body.[9] The Okavango seats seven compared to Azkarra’s five, making it a better option for your big family.
The bigger and heavier body does affect its fuel efficiency, though, as it clocks in at an average fuel efficiency rating of only 14.5 km/L. Still, this mild hybrid is a great choice if you’re looking for the best SUV in the Philippines.
Lexus LS 500h Premier
Highway rating: 15.4 km/L
Body type: Sedan
Transmission: Automatic
Performance: 354 HP @ 6,000 rpm
Seating capacity: 5
Price: Starts at ₱9,428,000
As if the average hybrid car price in the Philippines can’t get any higher, here comes Lexus with its line of hybrid standouts. What do you get for a car worth almost ₱10 million? A powerful V6 3.5L direct injection engine paired with two self-charging electric motors, a premium-feeling interior and exterior, and a 14-airbag collision safety feature.[10] Fuel efficiency could be better though, but that’s what a power-hungry engine gets you.
Hybrid Car Buying Tips
1. Make Sure to Get the Most Out of Your Buck
Even the cheapest hybrid car in the Philippines can still cost you more than ₱1 million. So, if the goal of going hybrid is to save more in the long run, get yourself a car that efficiently conserves fuel down to the last drop. As you’ve seen from the list above, a higher price tag doesn’t necessarily mean better fuel efficiency rating.
2. Choose Your Hybrid Car Type Carefully
The type of hybrid car you choose will affect your overall hybrid car experience. So, before you search where to buy a car with a hybrid system, make sure to choose a type that fits your lifestyle.
A parallel or series hybrid should be perfect if you prioritize fuel efficiency and want the full hybrid experience. A plug-in hybrid is best if you prefer to drive using your car’s electric power and don’t mind charging your car at home. A mild hybrid is usually cheaper than other hybrid types, so you can save more money upfront by choosing mild.
3. Choose a Hybrid with a Lighter, More Compact Body
If you’re looking to save more on fuel and don’t have a large family, it’s probably best to get yourself a smaller, more compact sedan. This will help your hybrid engine consume less fuel, further optimizing its efficiency.
Hybrid Cars FAQs
1. How much do hybrid cars in the Philippines cost in 2023?
The price range of hybrid cars varies wildly, but you can usually get one at around ₱1.2 million or higher. Prices can go as much as ₱10 million (at least as far as this list goes)—and that’s not even the most expensive one out there! If you’re looking to save more on a hybrid car, start figuring out where to buy second-hand cars.
2. Why are hybrid cars expensive in the Philippines?
Hybrid cars are more expensive than traditional cars because they’re usually packed with innovative features that aid their fuel efficiency, smooth handling, and low carbon emission, among many other perks. They may be expensive upfront, but they’re relatively more cost-effective in the long run, considering how they require less fuel and maintenance.
3. How long does a hybrid car battery last?
A hybrid car battery has a pretty long life. It usually matches the life of a car's regular battery, mainly because the electric motor of a hybrid car usually gets its power from the gas engine. Plus, the hybrid’s computer system monitors the charge of the electric motor, preventing it from overcharging and undercharging.
4. How do I charge a hybrid car battery?
Unless you have a plug-in hybrid, you don’t have to worry about recharging your hybrid car’s electric motor. Most hybrids feature self-charging batteries powered by their gasoline engine’s regenerative braking.
For plug-in hybrids, they need to be plugged into an external source for them to recharge, which usually takes four to eight hours.
5. Is a hybrid car more expensive to service?
Concerned about hybrid cars’ maintenance costs? You shouldn’t worry too much. Unlike traditional vehicles, hybrid cars are easier to maintain since their gasoline engines don’t experience too much stress. Their motors also have minimal moving parts and take longer to wear out. Aside from saving on gas money, you’ll also save on trips to the mechanic.
Final Thoughts
The concept of hybrid cars in the Philippines might sound futuristic, but these vehicle types are as good as reality in this modern age. Anyone can have a taste of the future now, so if you can afford one, make sure to maximize every million you spend on a hybrid.
Also, just like with any other vehicle, it’s always best to insure your million-peso purchase. Get a free car insurance quote from the country’s top insurance providers!

List of hybrid cars in the Philippines
Hybrid vehicles are slowly hitting the mainstream market thanks to increasing prices of oil and fuel both locally and globally. These hybrids bring greater fuel economy compared to their internal combustion engine counterparts and more advanced technology as well. These vehicles were once very expensive, however, with the advancement of technology they have become more affordable and are beginning to hit their stride in the local market. Hybrids reward drivers with a smoother and quieter ride. For those who are looking into purchasing a brand-new hybrid vehicle, you might want to consider the following models below. You’d even be surprised at how affordable the majority of the models included on the list are.
It's worth noting that there are three types of hybrids in this article: Mild Hybrid, Series Parallel Hybrid, and Plug-in Hybrid. EVIDA, or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, has incentivized Filipinos to buy hybrid electric vehicles. One of the incentives that most Filipinos consider with this law in effect until 2030 is the option to use the vehicle any time throughout the week. No coding, if you will. However, the exemption hinges on if the vehicle is recognized by the Department of Energy (DOE) or the Department of Transportation (DOTr) among other agencies.
Editor's Note: While this article is a general list of the mainstream hybrid vehicles in the country, it is in no way a guarantee that it will be coding exempt under the EVIDA law. However, it is also worth noting that safe bets include vehicles with Series-Parallel Hybrid Systems. Mild hybrids can still be exempt and receive the benefits that the law brings which will depend on what's on the vehicle's registration (OR/CR).

Toyota Corolla Altis (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
The Toyota Corolla Altis has always had an all-gasoline variant range in the Philippines, but that has already changed since its twelfth-generation model entered the local market. For the first time, Toyota Motor Philippines has made the Corolla Altis available with a Hybrid option. Retailing at P1,665,000, the Corolla Altis Hybrid is powered by a 1.8-liter 16-valve dual overhead cam inline-4 cylinder gasoline motor that is paired with an electric motor mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). It has a combined output of 121 hp and 142 Nm torque.
As expected, the Corolla Altis Hybrid is no sports car, though it does deliver impressive fuel economy figures in and out of town. During testing, it delivered 26.2 km/L in the city driving at an average speed of 60 km/h. Out on the highway, it clocked 29.7 km/L while speeding at 90 km/h.
Toyota Corolla Cross (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
The Toyota Corolla Cross became the answer for those who want the attributes of the renowned sedan in crossover form. Like the Altis, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is motivated by a 1.8-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor and mated to CVT. Compared to its sedan counterpart, the Corolla Cross has a combined power output of 120 hp and 142 Nm of torque which is 1 less horsepower than the Altis.
Like the Corolla Altis, the Cross also delivers strong fuel economy figures. During heavy city traffic, the compact crossover achieved 16 km/L. On the highway, the Cross boosted its figures to 23.5 km/L. Opting for the Hybrid trim is slightly more expensive yet still attainable, with it being priced at P1,650,000.
Toyota Yaris Cross HEV (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
After the Corolla Cross made a splash with its hybrid, and way after Toyota fielded the Corolla Altis with a hybrid motor in it, it was the Yaris' turn to get a lift and an electrified powertrain. Sharing most of the bones that made the Corolla Cross such a hit with Filipinos, the Yaris Cross downsized what the Corolla had to offer, and also gave it a nice bump down in price to match the smaller dimensions and powertrain.
The gasoline engine found in the Yaris Cross is a 1.5-liter 2NR-VEX four-cylinder engine that delivers 89 hp and 121 Nm of torque. The engine is not the centerpiece of this car's powertrain, but it is the hybrid system that gives it the extra boost it needs to be driveable. With a maximum combined output of 109 hp, the hybrid variant of the Yaris Cross makes decent figures for driving in the city and out of it. If you are considering this car, do ensure that you're getting the hybrid variant, which is the 'S HEV' trim.
Toyota RAV4 (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
In 2019, Toyota introduced a hybrid variant of the RAV4. The new RAV4 retains the go-anywhere capabilities present in previous incarnations of the RAV4 but with the added benefit of fuel efficiency and extra power thanks to a new hybrid system. The RAV4 has a price tag of P2,264,000 and P2,607,000 for the XLE and LTD variants respectively. These variants come equipped with a 2.5-liter 16-Valve Dual Overhead Cam inline four-cylinder gasoline engine that pumps out a potent 215 hp and 221 Nm of torque. This power unit is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and electric motor.
Although this generation of the RAV4 comes with a bigger engine, it doesn’t come with more hunger, in fact, we managed to get 18.5 km/L during testing. Impressive fuel economy once you consider the RAV4's size.
Toyota Camry (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
Another one from Toyota, here comes the Camry HEV. The is a midsize sedan that combines fuel efficiency with modern technology and a comfortable ride. It is a popular choice for those who value reliability and performance. Combined with a hybrid electric system, you can add fuel efficiency to those perks as well.
The Toyota Camry HEV is powered by a hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor. The combined output of the two power units adds up to 175 hp and 221 Nm. It is paired with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission.
The Camry HEV is both fuel-efficient and eco-friendly. Per kilometer, the Camry HEV emits 183 grams of Co2, and when you’re on the move, the Camry’s fuel consumption is clocked at 16.6 km/L
Toyota Alphard (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
Since its 2024 model year update, the Toyota Alphard has finally ditched the 3.5-liter V6 in favor of a 2.5-liter hybrid system. The gasoline motor in the minivan is an A25A-FXS motor that yields a combined output of 250 hp and a remarkable fuel efficiency rating (supplied by Toyota) of up to 17.5 km/L.
Toyota Zenix (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
The successor to the Innova, the Toyota Zenix brings a lot to the table thanks to its unibody chassis and its hybrid powertrain. Gasoline-powered and charged, the Zenix features a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline motor with four cylinders and an electric motor at the HEV trim level. With the hybrid powertrain, the vehicle makes 154 hp and 188 Nm of torque. The electric motor contributes a total of 112 hp to accelerate the car while the gasoline engine is there for additional power and charging duties.
Geely Azkarra (Mild Hybrid)
Geely has been doing great in the Philippines, with the Chinese automaker having a powerful line of vehicles including the Azkarra. Notably, the compact crossover is available with a mild-hybrid option that’s priced at P1,808,000. Aside from its premium appointments and a slew of convenience features, the compact crossover is also powered by a small yet potent 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a mild-hybrid system giving you that smooth and efficient drive. Combined power figures for the mild-hybrid variant equate to 190 hp and 300 Nm of torque.
Geely Okavango (Mild Hybrid)
The Geely Okavango is ‘Wonderfully Distinct’ for so many reasons, including the fact that it is the only 7-seater MPV in the Philippine market to feature a standard mild-hybrid system. Notably, this is by far the most affordable ticket to a hybrid vehicle. Starting at just P1,523,000, the Okavango Comfort trim already gives you a lot including an advanced mild-hybrid powertrain. Aside from fuel efficiency, the Ovanago also stands strong in terms of space and ride comfort, making it an ideal choice for families.
Nissan Kicks (e-POWER)
While the other hybrid vehicles on this list are still predominantly powered by their internal combustion engines, the Nissan Kicks takes it in a different direction. Instead of an engine powering the vehicle, it is powered by an electric motor. Nissan’s e-power technology is still technically hybrid technology, however, the main drivetrain for the vehicle is its electric motor and battery pack. The internal combustion engine that it has onboard the vehicle is only being used as a generator.
This means that when the battery is running low or more power is needed, the 1.2-liter 3-cylinder in the Kicks will turn on to provide more power to the car. In this manner, users get the near-instantaneous torque of an electric vehicle without having to worry about range anxiety. With this technology, the Japanese automaker can further stretch the range of the crossover. As of writing, the Nissan Kicks starts at P1,239,000 for the EL E-POWER variant.
Chery Tiggo 8 Pro (Plug-In Hybrid)
Another hybrid vehicle that has recently entered the market is the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. While the majority of its variants do come with internal combustion engines, it has one model that comes with a hybrid power plant. The 1.5-liter hybrid drivetrain gives it ridiculous power figures with 254hp and 390 Nm of torque putting some SUVs and even pickup trucks to shame with its torque and horsepower numbers. That being said, it's also frugal thanks to its battery pack and electric motor that gives the vehicle some EV-only range. The Tiggo 8 Pro presents itself as an enticing offer for those looking to get a big seven-seater crossover that is also frugal as well.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid)
Last, is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which is the only plug-in hybrid on the list. Under the hood is a 2.4-liter gasoline engine that produces 126hp and 199 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all wheels via a single-speed transmission for both the rear and the front as the electric motors are the primary drive units for the compact crossover.
Moreover, it also comes with a generous amount of safety kit such as a blind-spot warning system, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, collision mitigation system, and adaptive cruise control. It’s not as affordable as the other vehicles on the list, with it retailing at P2,998,000.
So are you considering any of the following vehicles we’ve mentioned above? If yes, then, don’t hesitate to click on the ‘Get Quote’ button—it’s absolutely free. You could even request to test drive the cars so you would know what you’ll like about them, first hand.
GWM Haval Jolion HEV (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
The GWM Haval Jolion HEV has two versions, a gasoline-only variant, and a hybrid variant. Of course, the one that makes the list is the hybrid, and it is a good all-around vehicle. Whether you're going on a trip out of town or through it, the Jolion in its hybrid trim comes with a smooth engine and transmission combo that saves you a few bucks at the gas station.
Equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine mated to a series-parallel hybrid-electric system, it makes decent power at 186 hp and 375 Nm of torque. The gasoline engine contributes only 94 horses and 125 Newton meters to the overall output, so it's safe to say that the electric motor in this car is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. If you want the hybrid powertrain, make sure that you get the top-of-the-line variant in the lineup.
GWM Haval H6 HEV (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
The H6 HEV is the bigger brother to the Jolion and one of the headlining cars of GWM in the Philippines when the brand was relaunched. Equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine mated to a substantially powerful electric motor, the Haval H6 makes quick work of straights and traffic crawls with its dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), and its "Supreme" equipment at the top-spec trim.
On top of the powertrain, which is actually quite capable with 240 hp and 530 Nm of torque, the H6 is a substantial performer, yet is still smooth thanks to GWM's engineering chops. All variants whether in the Max trim or the Supreme trim come with a hybrid system that motivates the car off the line and on the overtake.
Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid (Mild Hybrid)
An update to the famed Ertiga MPV, the Ertiga Hybrid features a very affordable way to get into a mildly electrified vehicle. The mild-hybrid system in the Ertiga isn't that substantial, but it takes away some load from the 1.5-liter gasoline engine to get better fuel economy and performance on the highway and in the city. It is for sure that the Ertiga Hybrid is a mild-hybrid car, however, and thus it's not as electrified as the other cars on this list.
With the same horsepower as before, at 103 hp and 138 Nm of torque, Suzuki's system takes care of the power under the curve and underneath peak engine speeds. It smoothens the power and torque coming out of the 1.5-liter and makes sure that the car gets up to speed while consuming the least amount of fuel. It's a simple system and one that assists more than it takes over. As an entry-level mild-hybrid system, this may be a car that most people can afford and consider if complexity is one of the concerns.
Mazda CX-90 (Mild Hybrid)
The Mazda CX-90 is the biggest and most luxurious crossover from the Japanese brand. The model features seven seats and it features a ton of space for either cargo or passengers alike. However, one of the headlines from the brand is the inclusion of its gasoline inline-six engine that is mated to a mild-hybrid electric system. The car is expected to drive well, and it has a ton of features to boot that enhance the experience even further.
Mazda's inline-six motor is still the star of the show, with the M Hybrid system delivering a bit of a boost on top of what the powerplant can deliver. With 3.3 liters of displacement, a turbocharger, and a claimed output of 280 hp and 450 Nm of torque mated to Mazda's M Hybrid tech, you have yourself a recipe for a potent do-it-all vehicle. The hybrid motor in this car contributes 16 hp and up to 153 Nm of torque which can also power the car independently of the motor in certain instances.
Mazda CX-60 (Mild Hybrid)
The Mazda CX-60 brought about a new era for the Mazda brand in the Philippines, causing a bit of a stir with long-time fans of the brand. The model was well-received, and it was not long after that Mazda decided to bring in another model with the same 3.3-liter engine layout, the CX-90. Launched first, however, it comes with a few things that actually make it one of the most compelling compacts in the market today.
Equipped with a 3.3-liter inline six gasoline or 3.3-liter diesel engine, the model in either trim gets Mazda's M Hybrid system, which includes an electric motor that can independently power the car in certain circumstances. The gasoline engine has 280 hp and 450 Nm of torque, while the diesel option gets 250 hp and 550 Nm of torque. Either model will take advantage of a 48-volt hybrid system that helps the car run smoothly and quickly off the line.
Mazda3 (Mild Hybrid)
One of the poster cars of the brand and one of the cars that earned Mazda its spotlight back then was the Mazda3. After a good time in the market with its sultry curves and lines, the model eventually got M Hybrid technology in it that allows it additional smoothness and fuel savings over the previous generation. The model now features a 2.0-liter as standard, but the top-of-the-line trim is the only one that gets mild electrification.
Honda CR-V e:HEV (Series-Parallel Hybrid)
Once a diesel and now a hybrid, the Honda CR-V e:HEV was welcomed to the Philippines for the 2024 model year, in which it received a generational update to its looks and its powertrain. Equipped with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine mated to Honda's e:HEV system. This allows the car to achieve 146 hp and 183 Nm of torque with its gasoline engine only. The model is otherwise a series-parallel system which means that the gasoline engine will take a back seat to driving the car once the electric motor is turned on, thus saving a ton of fuel and adding a bit of smoothness to this model's drive. It is worth noting that the hybrid variant is only available at the top of the line RS trim.

By Dan EdmundsUpdated: Feb 5, 2024Greg Pajo|Car and DriverWhat Is a Hybrid?A hybrid automobile is one that uses both an internal-combustion engine and an electric motor for propulsion, but the only fuel you'll put in is gasoline. (Diesel hybrids do exist, but they're mainly found in locomotives and other extreme heavy-duty applications.) Hybrids have small high-voltage batteries to power their electric motors, but you don't plug them in.With no external power source, electricity for the motor is scavenged under braking in a process called regenerative braking—regen for short. If you're an F1 racing fan, you may have heard it called a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). The regen system does not replace the traditional brakes but instead works as a crucial alternative. Electrical energy collected via this process is saved in the battery for immediate reuse the next time you accelerate. When you leave a stoplight, the saved energy gets the car going again and delays the restart of the gasoline engine—in some cases until you reach 25 mph. When you stop again, the cycle repeats. This makes a hybrid's city fuel economy much higher than a nonhybrid's, not to mention its own highway economy. How Does Regenerative Braking Work?Regen is a natural outgrowth of how electric motors function. When you put electricity into an electric motor, it moves (or helps move) the car. Once the car is moving, the same motor becomes a generator that can reverse the flow of electrons and harvest that motion to put electricity back into the battery. This is why hybrid electric motors are sometimes referred to as motor-generators. Crucially, this process slows the car, so regen is triggered and managed by a computer when you press the brake or descend a grade. How small is a hybrid's battery? Usually no larger than 1 kWh, which is 1 to 2 percent the size of a full EV's battery.One-pedal driving, a process by which lifting the throttle can trigger regen, is mainly present on full EVs, not hybrids, because EVs have higher-capacity electrical systems and much larger batteries. How small is a hybrid's battery? They are usually no larger than one kilowatt-hour (kWh), which is just 1 to 2 percent the size of a full electric vehicle's battery.Still, hybrid regen can be strong enough for most routine slowing. A computer always monitors how hard you press the brake pedal, so it will blend in the traditional brakes—the pads and rotors—during harder stops and in emergency situations. This regen-first approach maximizes the collection of electricity for propulsion so that fuel economy soars. Regen is a basic element that all hybrids share, but differences arise when it comes to the usage of their gasoline engines.Parallel HybridsThis is the most common type, as they are set up to use the selectively use the gasoline engine or the electric motor to drive the car. They can also engage both at once. The electric motor gets the nod at lower speeds because that's when their high initial torque and efficiency can make best use of the limited battery energy. After a delayed restart, the gasoline engine joins in and eventually takes over as speed climbs and settles into a cruise, at which point the engine is in its sweet spot. Some designs employ a single motor sandwiched between the engine and a conventional transmission, while others use an arrangement of two electric motors that work together to act as a continuously variable transmission for the engine. Examples of the former include early Honda hybrids as well as current Hyundai and Kia offerings such as the Elantra. The latter describes Toyota, Lexus, and Ford hybrids such as the Maverick.Series HybridsThis type is less common, but popularity is increasing. These also use a primary drive motor that propels the vehicle using regen-collected battery energy at low speeds and scavenges energy when slowing. Once speeds climb and that energy runs low, the engine switches on to drive a second dedicated generator that turns gasoline power into electricity to keep the battery fed. This means their wheels are electrically driven at all speeds, so power delivery always feels smooth and seamless. The downside is that converting gasoline into electricity represents an extra step that reduces efficiency, but newer approaches makes this less significant. Honda is the most recent champion of this type, which powers the latest iterations of the Civic, CR-V, and Accord hybrids.Michael Simari|Car and Driver2023 Honda Accord Hybrid.Blurred LinesLike anything else, hybrid systems do not follow such definitions to the letter. Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive is primarily a parallel system, but its dual-motor design also allows brief moments of series power generation when the engine's most efficient operating speed generates more power than the driver needs. Likewise, Honda's latest primarily series hybrid system can clutch the engine in to drive the wheels directly in specific conditions when the computer decides that's more efficient. Both exceptions are good things, because they show that engineers are pursuing the most efficient solution, not one that's simplest to explain.Check Out the ChoicesBest Hybrid Cars of 2024 and 2025Comparing the Prius and Prius Prime's Test ResultsHow to Choose: Hybrid, EV, PHEV, or Fuel-Cell Car?How Hybrids Benefit YouThe main benefit of any hybrid is to capture and reuse braking energy that would otherwise be lost as heat and wear in the brakes. The ones that interest most people use this recovered energy to save fuel and increase MPG using an electric motor to delay the start of the gas engine, but sports-minded hybrids deploy the harvested energy to boost overall power and speed.Fuel-saving hybrids are an excellent choice for those who want to save money or reduce their carbon footprint. After all, high MPG and low carbon emissions are two sides of the same coin. If you live in an apartment or will only have one car, an EV may be impractical. A hybrid, on the other hand, is a purely gasoline-fueled vehicle that does not have a leash or special fueling requirements. In more practical terms, a hybrid's strong focus on regenerative braking means that their brake pads and rotors will last much longer than those of normal cars. They also don't have a separate starter motor because the electric motor handles that. And a hybrid's small battery doesn't take up much space or require an expensive battery chemistry. Car and Driver2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid.Other Types of HybridsMild hybrids, sometimes called belt-alternator-starter or BAS hybrids, have modest 48-volt batteries that can't produce any meaningful propulsion. Such systems are, however, topped up by regeneration, and they combine the starter and alternator into one unit that can seamlessly start the engine “in gear”, so to speak, to smooth the operation of their start-stop systems.Fuel-cell hybrids are series hybrids, complete with an electric motor, regenerative braking, and a small high-voltage battery. But they don't have a gasoline engine. Instead, they have a fuel cell, a device that transforms hydrogen gas into electricity, with water the only byproduct. Fuel-cell hybrids therefore run on electricity all the time and are as quiet as EVs. Their hydrogen tanks can be filled in five minutes like normal cars, but station availability is extremely limited and mostly confined to major California population centers.toyota2023 Toyota Mirai.Plug-in hybrids are simply regular hybrids with greatly enlarged batteries designed to give them full speed operation on electricity alone for 20 to 50 miles. All the issues with charging an EV battery come to roost here, but they're not as acute because a plug-in hybrid's battery is about a quarter the size of an EV's. That makes them easier to plug in at home, and those that can manage this will have a part-time EV with no leash: a weekday EV commuter, but with full gasoline capability for long trips. And they're still efficient when running on gasoline because they retain the advantages of regular hybrids. Negatives include higher purchase cost because of the bigger battery, a greater likelihood that the larger battery will intrude on cargo space, and a possibly smaller gas tank.Dan EdmundsTechnical EditorDan Edmunds was born into the world of automobiles, but not how you might think.
